說明
1.
Participation & Discussion
20%
This is a course that combines practice with theory. We will discuss various theoretical issues regarding prosodic frameworks and work together to train our ears in order to differentiate the different tunes of various languages. Please help me make this course successful by giving me your input both inside and outside of classroom.
2.
Homework
30%
Throughout the course, we will have various exercises assigned to help you become familiar with the labeling system. All exercises will be discussed on the day they are due, so no late homework will be accepted.
3.
Presentation
20%
Each of you will be assigned papers for presentation and discussion throughout the course. For each presentation, you are to give a brief summary of the article, and lead an in-depth discussion on the topic.
4.
Course Project
30%
For the course project, you are required to select two recordings from the Bilingual Corpus (or from your own recording), one Mandarin, and one Taiwan Min, preferably from the same person. Finish text transcription and text labeling using Praat during the first half of the semester. Then based on what we learned in class, ToBI label the recordings. During the 13th week (5/11), you are required to do a 20-min formal presentation demonstrating your preliminary analysis of the different elements of prosody in the system, as is required by ToBI, by providing examples from the recordings, and preferably problematic snippets for which exact labels are hard to determine. The final report should be turned in by 5:00 pm Wednesday, 5/27, in my mailbox in GIL301, and should include both the paper printout and the electronic files of the labels. 10% of the grades will be deducted for each late day. The paper itself should be no more than a 20-paged, double-spaced, polished report.
